Jon: Isn't that interesting? Have you watched it? . Tim: But there was a lot of meat being outsourced from the temple. Then the chatat, [00:44:30] the purification offering and then here, the asham. And what is it instructing us about what it means to be in close proximity with God? Like, that's the animal going up. The ascension offering is first in the list because its foundational to the other offerings. And that the priests take their fingers and dip it in the blood and sprinkle objects [00:06:00] that, and we use the word purification. And so there's this logic, which is our corruption and violence actually also damages the environment. The four main types of sacrifices (offerings) God commanded Israel to give, as part of the Old Testament sacrifical system, were the burnt (Leviticus 1), sin (Leviticus 4), trespass (Leviticus 5:1 - 7:7) and peace offerings (Leviticus 3, 7). You must present it at the . Well, what happens with the smoke? But the first movement of Leviticus is five offerings. Tim: And remember, this is an animal. When God saw Abraham was willing to do this, He provided a ram in Isaacs place before the child could be sacrificed (Genesis 22:13). This bringing of the burnt offering was available for all Israelites, from the least to the greatest. Tim: The meat was kept, and then given either to the priests or to the priest and to the person who offered it. And then [00:03:30] the conversation before that was about how this section of Leviticus fits into the larger storyline of the Torah. Next week, we're back kicking around the second movement of Leviticus. Brings an offering to the LORD: Because sacrifice was already known to Israel, these instructions to the priests were not particularly new - they were mostly a clarification of a foundation that was already known to Israel through the traditions of their fathers. Find the Symbols of Repentance To offer, for instance, from the herd a male without defect would have been completely beyond some people . In Leviticus 9, the glory cloud of Yahweh descends on the altar and lights the fire for the first ascension offering, creating a way for the blameless animal to enter his presenceto re-enter Edenas the smoke ascends to Yahweh on behalf of Israel. The very name of the altar . Tim: And he comes down transformed in some way that way people are freaked out by his face. Daniel and the three friends sacrificed their lives [00:23:30] in the furnace of fire and lived through it. That which goes up. At the door of the tabernacle of the congregation - Wherever these words occur, they should be rendered: "at the entrance of the tent of meeting." We are damaging the gift of creation. Tim: That's the logic of the olah offering that Paul's working with there. And what he says is, "She gave the most precious gift of all. And the meat of the animal goes to the priest. It was a Victorian Do you know this? In Leviticus 1:4, the putting of the hand on the head of the offering was a bestowing of responsibility or guilt. A seven-day ceremony of consecration and celebration ends with everything going terribly wrong. Tim: in the life of Israel to teach them about a new way to be human, and a way to relate to God. It was so awesome. For ancient Israel, the answer was yes. And chate means to purify. So this is like the surrender of an animal. And these offerings are meant to be Torah, instruction, for how Israel is to come near to God; and therefore, how anybody is to come near to God, maybe not through offering animal sacrifices, but through understanding their meaning. I'll just name them real quick in the order that they appear. It satisfied God's wrath against sin and made fellowship possible between a holy God and a sinful person. Tim: I think, yes. Taking of the food that I've offered up and having a party near the temple. Jon: And for us, reading it they are Torah, they are instruction. Tim: No, this is just called the firstfruits. Anyway. Jon: And so, when you take a blameless animal [00:05:00] and you put your hand on it signifying this thing now is my representative. Tim: Have your kids seen it? Later, after Joshua, Caleb, and the Israelites entered the Promised Land and defeated Ai through the hand of God, they built an altar to the Lord on Mount Ebal and made burnt offerings as a way of renewing the covenant between God and Gods people and seeking Gods blessing (Joshua 8:30-35). The whole offering, except the skin of the animal, was burnt upon the altar and all went up to God as a sweet savour. That's the chatat offering. But God can see it [00:40:30] 'cause he sees all. It's put in a bowl. The "Walk With God" by SANCTIFICATION AND SEPARATION. Tim: Yes. In part four (33:20-52:37), the guys talk about the final two offerings described in Leviticus. Which means, I need to both repay the value of what I wronged you and add one-fifth. So, this is straight up you offer the sacrifice. As the Bible reveals in Hebrews 10:10-14, And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. The whole chunk. God comes down on the mountain and the Israelites say, no, we don't want to go up there. In Genesis 8:20, were told Noah sacrificed burnt offerings in gratitude and respect to God after the flood. Tim: There's the altar, yeah. A burnt offering is one that is consumed by fire, and regarded as ascending to God while being consumed. In all the other sacrifices, the value of the animal goes out to feed people. And so you wouldn't know looking around that we're constantly heaping our trash and damaging the tabernacle. We don't normally. But, as usual, the Holy Spirit, our Master Story Teller, has great purpose in everything He does! In this episode, Tim and Jon respond to your questions about the Leviticus scroll. They hoped it would serve as a symbolic representation of their wholehearted apology for any and all things they had done wrong or would potentially offend the Lord, whether intended or not. Why was the fire in the altar to burn continuously (Leviticus 6:13)? That is not an example. It's called the olah in Hebrew. Jon: We are in the book of Leviticus. What does it mean that Christians are the aroma of Christ? How was it even possible for Israelites to follow the law? Genesis 22:19-24 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba. What is the significance of this day the biblical authors have placed at the heart of the Torah? I mean, the goal is we want to keep playing host to God's presence in our midst. And it's the chatat offering that renews it. And that terrible thing creates a crisis. Before Solomon built Gods Temple, after his marriage to the daughter of the king of Egypt, the Bible says Solomon showed his lovefor theLord and offered a thousand burnt offerings on the altar at Gibeon (1 Kings 3:3-4). Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. Highlight the specific requirements of the burnt offering found in Leviticus 1:19 that are listed in the following chart. Tim: And I love, just, the Biblical poets, man, they got this. The death of the animal and its purging through fire and ascending is an image of what I need to undergopurging that could take my life. And so when people come to take refuge, when they come near, "They drink of the abundance of your house," it's the temple, "And you give them drink from the river of your," and it's the Hebrew word, "eden. It's usually [00:31:00] translated delight. The burnt offering, along with the others described in Leviticus 1-7, was offered on the bronze altar of burnt offering, the plans for which God gave Moses in the Book of Exodus: And you shall make the altar of acacia wood, five cubits long and five cubits wide; the altar shall be square, and its height shall be three cubits. Leviticus 1 gives instruction on the whole burnt offering, which represents Christ's total devotion to God, revealing in broad strokes the ideal we are to strive for in our relationship with God. This is what the word atonement means in biblical Hebrew and then all the examples where it's used in Leviticus. And why is it important? In the second movement of Leviticus, Aaron and his sons agree to the terms of their covenant with Yahweh, signing up to be the gatekeepers of Heaven and Earth. And that's what the asham is about. These chapters happen. Ascension is our translation of the Hebrew name for this offering, olah, which simply means to go up, so named because the focal point of this offering was the smoke that would rise up from the burning offering toward Heaven. The "Way to God" by SACRIFICE. When the earth was completely dry, Noah, his wife, and children emerged from the ark with all the birds and animals. Then you get the meat from the animal, and you have a party. Yeah, the more I've learned about these offerings, the more I see that their meaning is working on themes that are developed all throughout the rest of the Bible. A. Leviticus 3:1-5offerings from the herd . Tim: Ah, this is what Paul has to deal with in, Jon: But those get out of hand. It's the return to Eden. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? Tim: [00:13:00] That's right. As the children of Adam [00:30:30] take refuge in the shadow of your wings," this is imagery of coming into the, come into the temple where God lives, it's like he's a big bird. The ox takes precedence because it is the more costly and more important sacrifice. And in the last few episodes we've been looking at the many sacrifices that God instructs the people of Israel to offer him. Exodus 28:38; Leviticus 19:5; Leviticus 22:19-20; Leviticus 22:29; Leviticus 23:11.) We see much the same throughout 1 Kings, such as in 1 Kings 3:15, 8:64, 9:25, and 18:34-38. You must first bring your offering to the door of the tabernacle, which tabernacle represents the place where God dwells (v.3). God planned wisely in bringing the law of the sacrifices at this time. Among the Egyptians, a minute inspection was made by the priest; and the bullock having been declared perfect, a certificate to that effect being fastened to its horns with wax, was sealed with his ring, and no other might be substituted. Later, when God promised Abraham He would make him into a great nation (Genesis 12), it took many years for God to bless Abraham and Sarah with their miracle son, Isaac. 2 It must be slaughtered in the same place where the burnt offering is slaughtered. In the larger narrative, God has brought his holiness and power, and goodness and love, and Eden presence to the middle of their camp. Okay, tell me more about that. Jon: So next we're gonna get into the second movement of Leviticus. What does this day accomplish? This is a good example where you can watch Paul and Jesus do this where they actually pick up this section of Leviticus, and then turn it into Torah to give new kinds of instruction that get at the heart of what these offerings were all about in the first place. 2. Or just for others is the way to true life. 1. Tim: Moses can't go in. The burnt offering has four distinctive characteristics that set it apart from all others. (2) a young ram, or . It is so good. It's a participle that means going up. But you describe it in this cosmic language of taking refuge in God's shadow. You must make the offering of your own voluntary will (v.3). Then Noah built an altar to God and took a portion of all the clean animals and cleanbirds and sacrificed them. [00:01:30] This offering takes me through a journey that I need to undergo myself, which is a burning away of what I call life to embrace what is true life. at the door of the tabernaclewhere stood the altar of burnt offering (Ex 40:6). This is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. Tim: But, in taking my life, what it would be doing is transforming me to live in proximity to the source of real life. So, these are offerings of grain, but you could also offer vegetables and fruit. It's complete surrender. So, now it's the party, the shelamim. Okay. But death should have been mine. But this is it. Tim: In Leviticus 9, the altar fire is lit when the glory cloud , Tim: And lights the fire. A peace offering in the Old Testament Law is described in Leviticus 7:11-21. Tim: Oh, totally. Throughout 1 and 2 Samuel, the prophet Samuel, King David, and the people as a whole offered numerous burnt offerings to God as a plea on Israels behalf (1 Samuel 6:14-15, 1 Samuel 7-9-10, 1 Samuel 13:9-12, 2 Samuel 6:17-18, 2 Samuel 24:22-25). Jon: It's shooting the arrow into the Olympic torch? And Moses says, okay, I will. Yeah. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. Stop motion? And you come and give them to the priest, and the priest will take some of it. Daniel 4:33 At that moment the sentence against Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. 3) Peace offering. They gave each other ashams. Leviticus 17:4 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD; blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people: Exodus 29:4 And Aaron and his sons thou shalt bring unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shalt wash them with water. This is Deuteronomy chapter 26. Chad: We believe the Bible is a unified story that leads to Jesus. As we damage the environment, in general, between human evil and injustice, we are also vandalizing [00:06:30] God's living room. [00:48:30] That you would give fruit to God from your olive tree. This is our last conversation. Is the scapegoat a hyperlink to Cain and Abel? And so for the greatest acts of polluting sin, you got to take the blood into the tent. The minchah offering is you've given me all of harvest this year. And to wrong people is to wrong God. The burnt offering was an indication that the offerer wanted to give himself to God and be acceptable unto Him. . But our sins endanger my proximity to the source of all life. Tim: that your brother has something against you, don't think you can just go make things right with God but leave things unresolved. What Does the Bible Have to Say about Weed? If the olah offering is about God I offer my whole self in surrender to you, the minchah offering is essentially saying thank you for what you've given me. Yeah. You must offer an animal that is a male without blemish (v.3). It outlines those first five offerings. Tim: What a waste. Because, let's say, like, he gets into a bar fight or something and he [00:39:30] gets punched the bruise appears on the painting. And so, all of these offerings are Well, it was ways for ancient Israel [00:47:00] to actually participate in this reality. The root letters of this offering are the same letters as the root word sin.. As we pick up the story from where we left off in Exodus, we find even Moses unable to enter Gods presenceand a whole bunch of laws about situations many of us have never considered. But because of his posture of humility, the fire of God's heavenly temple doesn't destroy him, it burns him. And what he says is, "She gave the most precious gift of all.". The sacrifice is completely burned by the fire (see v.9). Ooh, how did this altar fire [00:19:30] get lit in the first place? You know? Fourth is the purification offering, sometimes called the sin offering. And then on the eighth day, which is supposed to be the day of great celebration, something terrible happens. In the peace offering, the presenter keeps all the valuable meat, shares some with the priest, and then throws a dinner party for widows, orphans, and the rest of their family. The main teaching of the Book is- HOW SIN MAY BE PUT AWAY. Those become, like. 7 The Lord continued, "These are the instructions for the guilt offering. Chad: My favorite thing about the BibleProject is how it really clarifies and illuminates [00:52:00] a lot of the themes in the Bible, which helps me read the Bible with more integrity, and helps me notice things that I feel like I wouldn't have otherwise. For instance, the Lord reveals through the prophet Hosea, For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings (Hosea 6:6). Jon: And what is life but being in communion with God, eating of the tree of life. You must put your hand on the head of the sacrificial animal and then kill it yourself (see vv. Leviticus 6:10 And the priest shall put on his linen robe and linen undergarments, and he shall remove from the altar the ashes of the burnt offering that the fire has consumed and place them beside it. So, but this [00:12:00] is, this is fundamental to what this offering means. So that which ascends. The offering was then to be flayed and cut up into pieces. Tim: An offering. Tim: But it's brought to your attention. That's if the high priest has failed. . Tim: Before God. If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD. He's talking about the logic of the asham offering. Jon: That's where you make the sacrifice. However, this noun isn't formed off of the vowel pattern [00:34:00] of the word sin. It's formed off of the vowel pattern of the verb chate, which is the same root letters, but that different vowel, chatat versus chate is of an important difference. In 1 Kings, Solomon continued in the ways of his father and Samuel and the righteous, God-fearing leaders before them, making burnt offerings consistently to the Lord. Yeah. So, this is something just Israelites did to each other. But we kinda saw that coming. The first thing that is said details the kind of offering that God would accept from their hands. The story animating Jesus is the story that's being symbolically encapsulated in the olah offering. But the Israelites gave one-tenth of all their produce to the temple. Jon: Because what we're gonna do now is we're gonna talk about the five different offerings. As we studied Leviticus 1-5 one of the things that we said was the various offerings that are addressed there are addressed from the standpoint of the one who is bringing those offerings. And he makes this pact that if he gets eternal life, the picture in the entry way that will age. Are there specific times humans can meet with God in special ways? So it's truly like a token thank you kind of thing. Tim: That's fine. In this episode, join Tim and Jon as they walk through the five offerings ancient Israelites made to Yahweh and see how the purpose of these practices sound a lot like the teachings of Jesus. Yeah, that's, actually, the most intuitive way to think about it. Tim: And we're just gonna say this is one of the offerings that atones for sins. [1] Tim: "We will be satisfied with the goodness of your [00:32:30] house, your holy temple." It's like a repayment for damages. You must make your offering (Leviticus 1:2), meaning you cant offer something that belongs to someone else. Jon: And only whats blameless will pass through. The fifth one is called the asham. But then, when you wrong someone [00:41:30] else, because they're an image of God, you're also wronging God. So, Jacob Milgrom, he uses this metaphor of, [00:38:30] ah, this novel. Jon: And as we meditate [00:47:30] on them, and I'll continue to meditate on thisabout our lives, how to draw near to God. Ooh, the alter [00:10:30] that sits in the courtyard of the tabernacle that's right in front of it . But right. Your incense is detestable to me. Also, I simultaneously vandalize the holy space. Tim: Ah, ba'ar, which means to consume something in fire. Tim: Depending on what story you have in your mind about it. The thing I'm doing out here occasionally is actually happening inside the tent with the altar of incense perpetually. Tim: [00:40:00] The way we damage each other relationally is actually polluting the tabernacle. The story symbolically captured in the ascension offering animates Jesus storythat of laying down his life as a blameless representative and re-entering Yahwehs presence, so all humanity might have the chance to enter Eden too. With most offerings, only part of an animal was burned up, and part was saved to feed the priest who offered it. I think the logic underneath it is when I wronged you, I also wronged God . The ram then took the place of the human, therefore symbolizing the payment of a debt. Leviticus 1:2. Jon: And to create Because the purpose of being in proximity with God is to be in the Eden place, to be where things are complete, and there is peace and shalom, and we're treating each other right. However, there is one burnt offering that strictly applies to Jesus called the "continual burnt offering." It is the second . Oh, [00:18:00] it's amazing. Tim: And it's what the priests ate, and they would take it home for their families. And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar: it is a burnt offering unto the LORD: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire unto the LORD. Jon: In that sense it's like an ancient butcher shop? You must flay, or skin, the offering (v.6). Tim: It's super cool. However, if you go down and you hear that if the whole congregation of Israel [00:37:00] has failed morally, then they bring a chatat. Tim: Yeah. It's a normal Hebrew word. Tim: But the olah, all value is surrendered over to God. Yep, [00:14:30] yep. Leviticus 1:3. Anyway, I haven't read it through, but I've been using it for a couple decades now. Jon: Why doesn't this just take place outside the temple? The sin offering also is burnt upon the same altar as the burnt offering (see Leviticus 4:22-26) except it doesn't have horns. Tim: It begins with a story, not a tech manual, but a story about the tent and the priesthood being ordained and inaugurated. I mean, it seems like, if I owe you a donkey, why are we going and killing it in the temple? How Does the Book of Ecclesiastes Point Us to Christ? And so it's this whole story about how he has to start hiding the painting and covering it up and making sure nobody sees it. 2) Grain offering . It turns it into a form where it can enter into the heavenly throne room of God. When Isaiah wakes up in a vision in Isaiah chapter 6 and he's standing in the temple, which is a portal to the heavenly temple, [00:21:00] and he sees seraphim, burning ones. Okay. She has a weekly YouTube devotional, too. Jon: That, that, whoever wants to find their life will lose it. He calls it his anointing. Like, let me, I'll give you a new donkey. Genesis 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And what you're told is if the high priest has failed morally, then he has to bring chatat. Tim: That's Romans chapter 12. It's like the Olympic torch. It's kinda like the golden calf, like, we just kicked off the relationship. The legs represent our walk, or the direction we are going. The two great commandments of the Book are, be Holy, be Clean. Jon: If that doesn't mean anything to you. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of Gods one and only Son., When we believe in Jesus, repent of our sins, and strive to follow Him, we are made holy because of Him. So, this idea of coming in, going up to the mountain of the Lord, ascending, entering into the courts, having meals and feasts celebrating the abundance of God's goodness. Every time you wrong someone in your community, you have to make it right with them and you have to go do this asham in the temple. Jefe: We're a crowd-funded project by people like me. In response, the Bible tells us, The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And I get to drink from God's temple. You can see the translation of the titles of these offerings is up for grabs. A priest will throw the blood against the altar on all sides. All value is surrendered over to God. (c) Meaning, within the court of the tabernacle. Looking up, there's the altar. All of our modern English translations, at least the main ones, translate as sin offering. Jon: And it's offering back all [00:26:30] your stuff. Tim: Yeah. That's right, yeah. And we come under his wings. Tim: Yes, yes. Tim: Which is about the God of Heaven and Earth has taken his holy life-giving source of all being and existence, presence, and made an outpost among the people of Israel that is both good for them and very dangerous for them. And it damages creation. And the burning ones take a coal from the altar of incense. The word "blood" occurs 87 times. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. So this story is about a guy who makes a pact with the devil or with a demon, or something like that if he's given [00:39:00] eternal life, he has a portrait of himself hanging in the entry way of his mansion. What Did the Burnt Offerings Really Mean? The burning is what transforms it into a mode of existence. Or I'm gonna take a sample section and bring it here. Tim: But actually, it was just a small thing really close to the camera (laughs). It's a powerful image. 14, Lk. And that's the asham offering. That's what this offering means. (Leviticus 16). Which also makes it holy and atones for it. Jesus is the ultimate and perfect offering, and the salvation Jesus offers is available to anyone who chooses to follow Him and turn their hearts and souls toward God now and forever. But here, you're giving the fruit of your mouth, that is your words. Every other place was forbidden, under the highest penalty (Le 17:4). So, it would look big. And I've learned so much from him. Tim: We really recommend pausing right now and listening to the last conversation. Third is the peace offering, sometimes called the fellowship offering. So you have this idea that depending on your position in Israel, or if it's the whole group or just one, the pollution is greater or lesser. Tim: Because you are an image of God. That's the seven , Tim: And it's actually described as having proportionately. Tim: Covering death with life. So, there it's an anointing for burial in the story, but there is shades of [00:14:00] meaning for the olah offering and what she's doing. Tim: And then if you just happen to see the priest open up the curtain as he goes in what you'd see, you would see a room with another identical curtain back there with two more cherubim on it that goes into the holy of holies. Tim: Yeah, of relational harmony and then abundance, a celebration of abundance. And these offerings are given to Israel as a means to overcome the rift. And Jesus accepts it. [00:33:30] And, I'm pretty sure Yeah. Tim: Then, you come in here. Tim: Yeah. So Morales thinks that that visual symbolism is important. So, down in verse 27, Leviticus 4, "If any, just single individual of Israelite sins or fails morally, then he should bring a chatat." Jon: You thought you got by the cherubim. Tim: Oh, okay. LORD, that is in the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall pour out all the blood at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. At the consecration of Aaron and his sons as Gods priests, God commanded Moses to offer a burnt offering, and he complied. Jesus was so into this. The fourth offering, usually called the sin offering in English, is called the khattat in Hebrew. Leviticus 1:89 speaks of offering various parts of the animals body. This is about you do that a few times and, hopefully, you would get some instruction from that, and, like stop wronging your neighbor in that way. 89). Its ashes would be scattered in a clean area, and it would not be eaten or disturbed in any way other than to be entirely burned in the fire and offered in totality to the Lord. Jon: 'Cause there's something about being burnt up into death, losing your life is the way to find real life. What does laying of hands represent? It is to be remarked that the phrase "for your acceptance," or "acceptable for you," is only used in connection with burnt offerings and peace offerings, but never with sin offerings. . Tim: Yeah, because remember, this all started with the crisis. "Holiness" is a word we frequently associate with the Bible, but what does it mean? It marked the boundaries between day and night. Tim: And he has to hide the painting and make sure nobody ever sees it to discover his secret. The burnt offering teaches that God is pleased to accept anyone who comes to Him through His prescribed sacrifice (Leviticus 1:3). And whats with the sacrificial goat and the scapegoat? All the light that we see is by means of God's light. Ezra describes the burnt offerings made after the peoples return to Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the temple, and Nehemiah after he and the people rebuild the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 10:33).
