Christians of all eras have a part in what occurred on the Day of Pentecost. Jesus is"both Lord, "which signifies having power or authority, "and Christ, "literally the Anointed One or Messiah. Not only did He show His interest for man, and His grace to the evil and lost, but, above all, His honour for Jesus. Although David was the author of the passages quoted, the words could not refer to him, as he was dead, whereas the person referred to here was alive. There is no spring of blessing that we are entitled so to boast of as the Lord: there is none that so delivers from self. In that day it was unthinkable that people would be so drunk so early in the day (about 9:00 in the morning). "Lukes specific emphasis (and contribution) to NT pneumatology is that the Holy Spirit was poured out on the church not just to incorporate each believer into the body of Christ or provide the greater new covenant intimacy with him, but also to consecrate the church to the task of worldwide prophetic ministry as defined in Luke 4:16-30." Is it not well therefore for us to realize to what we belong, and what the Lord looks for from us, and what it is He has recorded for our instruction as well as comfort? . In the exercise of this orifice, he now rules in heaven and on earth, and will yet come to judge the world. That it was the gift of Christ, and the product and proof of his resurrection and ascension. Peter also showed his hearers that the Lord was greatly exalted in heaven as the Head over all things to his church, for he had that day shed abroad the Holy Spirit. And may your life show forth the works of God that He has wrought in you. Man, by the sacrifice of Jesus, the only begotten of God, is brought to the Light. The most awful sight for the impenitent in the day of judgment will be the face of the Lord Jesus Christ. Nothing could more falsify the fruit of the Spirit of God here than converting it into a tacit rule: there was no compulsion whatever in the case. The Most High God is on the side of Jesus, and you are avowedly on the other side; is this right, or wise? 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: The LORD said to my Lord, You cant turn towards God without turning from the things He is against. v. However, we should not assume those who were not immediately understood by human ears spoke gibberish, as the modern gift of tongues is sometimes called with derision. He now sits on the Fathers throne in heaven ruling sovereignly, not on Davids throne fulfilling Old Testament prophecies concerning the Davidic kings future reign (cf. This speech is an excellent example of forensic rhetoric, the rhetoric of defense and attack. xiv. "And the Lord added daily to the church such as should be saved." Peter quotes Joel 2:28-32 which predicts the giving of the Holy Spirit. He was Lord, as God, always; but as God-and-man, he is now Lord and Christ. Him, being delivered by the determinant counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain ( Acts 2:23 ): Notice as Peter talks about the cross he's not speaking of some horrible, tragic accident that happened. It was this Jesus whom God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses. Hence without delay the disciples proceed to act. iv. They had seen Him risen from the dead. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. Do you not hear the song which ascribes to him honour, and glory, and power, and dominion, and might? What happened at Pentecost we really do not know except that the disciples had an experience of the power of the Spirit flooding their beings such as they never had before. the multitude came together, and were confounded, because every man heard them speak in his own dialectus ( Acts 2:6 ). He did so to empower them to proclaim the gospel of Gods grace (cf. I do not suppose that you have been guilty of the vulgar language of blasphemy, which is coarse and revolting, as well as profane; but there are politer methods of committing the self-same crime. They have that ready access, the ability to just quote from God's Word. Now Peter is going to expound on this text. [Note: Barclay, pp. "The title Lord was also proclaimed christologically in Jewish circles, with evident intent to apply to Jesus all that was said of God in the OT . There was an effort about it, as you stifled conviction. i. Be buried with him in whom your sin is buried. (Acts 2:46-47) The Christian family lived together and grew. The gift of the Holy Spirit is given according to formula. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common: With the influx of more that 3,000 believers, most of whom stayed in Jerusalem and didnt have jobs, the family of Christians had to share if they were to survive. This is the summary, and the point Peter is proving by all the evidence he has presented in his sermon. May God write out this old, old story on your hearts! Turn, I pray you, from your evil way, and turn unto the Lord with full purpose of heart. What about him? The gift of God's Holy Spirit is for you tonight. That precisely fits Acts 2:13. And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? We have not merely the Lord going up to heaven, but His servant, who saw heaven, open, and Jesus, the Son of man, standing at the right hand of God. They were once numbered with us, and went in and out of our solemn assemblies for prayer and breaking of bread; but now we know them not. Both Lord and Christ. c. Men and brethren, what shall we do? To God he is the ever-living, the ever well-beloved Christ. Those who had, were selling in order that they might distribute to those who did not have, that they might be able to help them. in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry. In the early Church there was a winsomeness in God's people. Biblical Commentary (Bible study) Acts 2:14a, 36-41 EXEGESIS: THE CONTEXT: For an introduction to Acts 2, see the exegesis for Acts 2:1-21. We shall seldom see the very greatest wonders wrought when the preacher stands by himself; but when Peter is described as standing up "with the eleven," then is there a twelve-man ministry concentrated in one; and when the inner circle is further sustained by a company of men end women who have entered into the same truth, and are of one heart and one soul, then is the power increased beyond measure. The Gospels Amen. Sixth, there was apologia, a defense of the Christian message in the face of hostile adversaries. Individual instructors or editors may still require the use of URLs. This it is which is the making of the preacher. He comes down next to their temple; for this was an important point. Normative dispensationalists (both classical and revised, to use Blaisings labels) hold that Peter only meant that Jesus of Nazareth was the Davidic Messiah. Thus we have here an appeal to the nation as such; for in all this it will be observed he does not speak a word to them of the Lord Jesus as Head of the church. b. Pr. But better, as the Spirit gave them the ability or prompted their speech. We notice certain phenomena accompanying the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. "And he shall send Jesus Christ, who was fore-appointed for you: whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began." Set at liberty those who were captive. There can be no other conclusion but what the death of Jesus Christ on the cross was planned by God long before Jesus ever came into the world. When Jesus was arrested, Peter cut off the right ear of one of the men who came to arrest Jesus (John 18:10). You remember when they were asking Jesus for a sign, and He said, "No sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. To the early Church the resurrection was all-important. The unbelievers were warned, "and of the rest durst no man join himself unto them." And so, they had the "Living Christmas Tree." After all, communication with God, not man, is the purpose of the gift of tongues (1 Corinthians 14:2). The Feast of Pentecost was marked by them taking a portion of their field and harvesting it. You believe it. But apparently all was lost. "for he says himself, Jehovah said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thy foes thy footstool." And he got so sick from spinning, he began to throw up. Minor Prophets You can copy the order of your preferred Bible translations from the Bibles Tab to the Version Picker (this popup) or vice versa. Does John 12:25 Teach That We Must Hate Our Lives? For two reasons that is not likely. But emphatically it was to be a time of testimony till He returns in glory. But this stress of early preaching on prophecy conserved the great truth that history is not haphazard and that there is meaning to it. 3. He, who was once such a coward that he trembled before a little maid, now that he is filled with the Spirit, boldly charges this crowd with being murderers and deicides because . We fear "they went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us." You had to put forth a decided act of the will to quench the Spirit of God, and to escape from the strivings of your awakened conscience. 36 "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.". You have often heard and sung of him whose face was more marred than that of any man, when he was here as a sacrifice for guilty men. [Note: See Darrell L. Bock, "Jesus as Lord in Acts and in the Gospel Message," Bibliotheca Sacra 143:570 (April-June 1986):147-48. It is exactly like that voice which Bunyan heard as if at his very shoulder demanding, "Wilt thou leave thy sins and go to heaven, or wilt thou have thy sins and go to hell?". They had to show publicly that they believed Jesus to be the Christ, the one whose divine authority was shown by the mighty works that God did through him (cf. I was nothing. If we read through Peter's sermon as a whole we will see how these five strands are woven into it. Suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. i. That we might, indeed, be His witness of His love in this world in which we live today. They really did constitute the body of Christ; they were baptized by one Spirit into one body; but to be that one body, and to know that such they were, are two very different things. What does Acts 2:36 mean? This is the wonderful way in which God now speaks by the Holy Ghost. pp. The Old Testament The Lord grant that hearts may be pricked by this sermon, for his name's sake! Yes, he had slain the faithful creature which had preserved his child. Unable to judge between them definitely, the rest spread the matter before the Lord who must choose His own apostle. b. Repent, and let every one of you be baptized: Responding to the question, What shall we do? But he was addressing the question, "What meaneth this?" He is the highest in the highest heavens. Simply, all Israel should know that even though they crucified Jesus, God has declared Him both Lord and Christ. But more than this. It was not possible that Jesus should remain a victim of the sin and hatred of man; He would certainly triumph over it. . That the early Christians meant to give Jesus the title Lord in this highest sense of all is indicated by their not hesitating on occasion to apply to him passages of Old Testament scripture referring to Yahweh. (Bruce). As proof for the resurrection, Peter offers three lines of evidence: 1) the prophecy by David, who foretold of the resurrection ( Ps 16:8-11 ); 2) the twelve apostles as witnesses; 3) the Spirit's outpouring itself , indicative of Christ's exaltation and reception of the promise of the Spirit from the Father. 92. and having received of the Father the promise ( Acts 2:33 ), "And it shall come to pass in those days, saith the Lord, I will pour out my Spirit." They had thus crucified the hope of their nation; imbrued their hands in the blood of him to whom the prophets had looked; and put to death that Holy One, the prospect of whose coming had sustained the most holy men of the world in affliction, and cheered them when they looked on to future years. As God's act; and in him it was an act of wonderful grace and wisdom. Thus the link with the expectations of the earthly people, though broken by death, is reset for ever in resurrection. In short, he shows that Israel had sinned against God in every ground of relationship. Who is it for? When Peter said, "Repent!" This is an excellent illustration of the principle that the filling of the Holy Spirit is not just for abstract power, but for purity. This introduces the first of three Old Testament passages Peter will quote: Joel 2:28-32, Psalm 16:8-11, and Psalm 110:1. ii. 28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. It was the more important to state this great truth, because He had said a short time before "Receive ye the Holy Ghost;" and the ignorance that is natural to us might have used the words in John 20:1-31 to deny the further power and privilege that was about to be conferred in the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven. The application of this prophecy to the present event (Acts 2:16; Acts 2:16): This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; it is the accomplishment of that, it is the full accomplishment of it. And he got so upset--this is true--he began to curse. 22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. Instead, Peter proclaimed the truth like a herald. It was not, as in the gospels, a testimony to the grace of the Lord, although nothing but grace could have given Him to man. But Peter, standing up with eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem." When a man rinds out that he has done a fearful wrong to one who loved him, he grows sick at heart, and views his own conduct with abhorrence. Those that use the law now as a measure among Christians lower the test of judgment incomparably. But it is according to God that repentance is put forward here rather than faith. The margin is correct. 248.] The inhabitants of Jerusalem had gone further, and had consented unto his death; nay, had even clamoured for it, crying, "Crucify him, crucify him." "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ." a. It was thus a very memorable sermon, a kind of first-fruits of the great harvest of gospel testimony. O my hearers, whatever you may think of the Lord Jesus, God thinks everything of him! But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: In the midst of this great outpouring of the Holy Spirit, among signs and wonders and speaking in tongues, what did Peter do? Now he's back to the question again, "What meaneth this?" That resurrection has not yet taken place. Acts chapter 2. We know that in principle the cross does make a breach, and an irreparable one, with all that is of the first man; but the power of old habits with the joy that overflowed their souls made them for the moment to be, I may say, better Jews. This was explanation and interpretation of the facts-the "so what?" (ii) It had an agricultural significance. Well the next year it had to be a bigger Christmas tree, you know, bigger than the year before, because it's got to be the best. This reconciled him to the cross: Father, thy will be done; and Father, glorify thy name; let thy purpose take effect, and let the great end of it be attained. (Acts 2:14-40). ii. Historical Books Thus the only true foundation is laid, and heaven becomes the point of departure not the earth, nor the first man, but the second man, the last Adam, from the only place that was suitable for Him according to the counsels of God. Revelation 3:21). The constant regard that our Lord Jesus had to his Father in his whole undertaking: I foresaw the Lord before me continually. They broke bread at home, in contrast with the temple. Second, the fellowship: the koinonia--a very interesting Greek word. There seems to be good reason to understand these words as being addressed not to the dwellers in all those countries mentioned by Luke (Acts 2:8-12), but to the Jews of the Holy City itself, there being no evidence that the Diaspora had taken any hand in the rejection of Christ. The experience of those of the first group (i.e. Whenever Gods work is done, Gods people gather for prayer and worship. .," 6:411; Emil Brunner, The Misunderstanding of the Church, p. 161; Neil, p. 71; Longenecker, p. 271; and Morgan, p. 22). Fulfilling Prophecy. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Or some may have spoke in a completely unique language given by God and understood by Him and Him alone. Now when we read that psalm of his, we must consider, 1. This was a glorious emphasis on Pentecost. We receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and in that power we can win battles we never thought to win and resist things which by ourselves we would have been powerless to resist. The Day of Pentecost: This was a Jewish feast held 50 days after Passover. 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?". b. Devout men, from every nation under heaven: The multitude from many nations gathered in Jerusalem because of the Feast of Pentecost. These were the four institutions of the early church. Acts 2:36-47New International Version. [2.] (b) We must never think that anything Jesus did changed the attitude of God to men. They always went in to God before they went out to the world; they were able to meet the problems of life because they had first met him. Jesus alone fittingly could say, "I commend my spirit." It was not possible that the chosen one of God should remain in the grip of death; the abyss can no more hold the Redeemer than a pregnant woman can hold the child in her body. (Bruce, quoting Bertram). If you do not so believe, it is of little use for me to describe what the result of such belief would be, for that result will not take place in you; but if you have so believed, and Jesus is to you Lord and Christ, you will look on him whom you have pierced, and mourn for him. They would not have submitted to baptism unless they were fully convinced of who Jesus was and their great need for Him as a Savior. First, The text quoted at large (Acts 2:25-28; Acts 2:25-28), for it was all fulfilled in him, and shows us, 1. Christ's scholars never learn above their Bible; and the Spirit is given not to supersede the scriptures, but to enable us to understand and improve the scriptures. Yet it is this Christ, this mighty Christ, who is set at nought by some of you, so that you run the risk of perishing because you have no heart for him and his great salvation. i. The heart is opened by faith, and the Holy Ghost is given by the grace of God to those that believe, not in order to their believing. Both John the Baptist and Jesus had foretold the outpouring of the Holy Spirit described by Luke, referring to it as a baptism (Matthew 3:11; Acts 1:4-5). They were all astonished and did not know what to make of it, and they kept on saying to each other, "What can this mean?" When our Lord Jesus was born, it was promised that the Lord God would give him the throne of his father David,Luke 1:32. a. Oh, how will you bear it? Therefore, he comes back now to the resurrection. It is not proposed as probable, but deposed as certain: Let them know it assuredly, and know that it is their duty to receive it as a faithful saying, First, That God has glorified him whom they have crucified. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit ( Acts 2:38 ). And as Christ died, so he rose again, according to the scriptures; and that he did so we are witnesses. But one of the first characteristics that we find of the men that God uses is that they are men of prayer. An invitation to call on the name of the Lord. May I here pause to ask do you know this assuredly? When we read "they were pricked in their heart," we may see in it the meaning, that they felt a movement of love to him a relenting of heart, a stirring of emotion towards him. "Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.". (Acts 2:34-36) Quoting Psalm 110, Peter explains the Divine Messiah. If God saves you, youre saved. Before man ever sinned, God had in mind to send His Son to redeem man from his sin, and thus to manifest God's love for sinning man. A lonely ministry may sometimes effect great things, as Jonah did in Nineveh; but if we look for the greatest and most desirable result of all, it must come from one who is not alone, but is the mouthpiece of many. And they continued steadfastly: On the day of Pentecost the sound of the rushing wind, the tongues of fire, and the conversion of 3,000 were all remarkable events. This meets the chief reasoning founded on the common text which Mosheim urges with his usual force against the view in which, he confesses, and the commentators agree (i.e., in representing Matthias as having been chosen an apostle by lot, agreeably to the ancient Jewish practice). * To speak in different tongues: ecstatic prayer in praise of God, interpreted in Acts 2:6, 11 as speaking in foreign languages, symbolizing the worldwide mission of the church. ], "The plot of a work can often be illuminated by considering the major conflict or conflicts within it. [2.] Accordingly, thus accused, Stephen answers the appeal of the high priest, "Are these things so?" And so, if they had with scorn refused Him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go, if they had denied the Holy One and Just, and desired a murderer to be granted, if they had killed the Prince [leader, originator] of life, whom God raised from the dead, they had simply shown out what they were. He says, "For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call." All was wisely ordered. And it was not by Peter's preaching only, but that of all, or most, of the rest of the hundred and twenty, that three thousand souls were that day converted, and added to the church; but Peter's sermon only is recorded, to be an evidence for him that he was thoroughly recovered from his fall, and thoroughly restored to the divine favour. In any case, be ye sure of this, ye Gentiles, even as Peter would have the house of Israel be sure of it, that "God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ." The Christian life is meant to be full of fellowship, of sharing one with another. 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know beyond a doubt that God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ." Introduction 2 I've mentioned my "five minute rule" in the past, but I'll repeat it for those who may not have heard it previously. The crowd came from people milling about the temple courts. But now the Spirit shall be poured out, not only upon the Jews, but upon all flesh, Gentiles as well as Jews, though yet Peter himself did not understand it so, as appears, Acts 11:17; Acts 11:17. "And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias." And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. It was aimed, not at the head, but at the heart. The crowd had a common language (Greek), and Peter preached a sermon to them in that language! See Acts 5:31. The gift of the Holy Spirit can come upon not only individuals, but also upon groups (see also. 3. O sirs, what do our hearts suggest but that we bow at his feet? We are serving a great and growing cause in the way chosen of God, and we hope in the future to see still larger results produced by that same undying and unchanging power which helped Peter to preach such a heart-piercing sermon. Their consciences could not fail to remind them how the Gentiles would have willingly let Him go, and how their voices and will had prevailed against even that hardened governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate. For You will not leave my soul in Hades, .," p. 104. They were declaring the wonderful works of God in the various languages and, of course, this amazed the people. i. Therefore, he is exalted at the right hand of God ( Acts 2:33 ). The basic evidence of the resurrection was simply the report of reliable eyewitnesses: Of which we are all witnesses. Though he was a man after God's own heart, yet he went the way of all the earth, as he saith himself (1 Kings 2:2), both in death and burial. His demonstration runs parallel with his preceding one as to the Resurrection. The word approved is literally, "proved to be of God among you." The distribution made to each before was more direct and immediate; now it takes effect through the apostles. The Old Testament But this is not all. Luke-Acts But Dr. Hammond shows that the Septuagint, and from them the apostle here, uses the word for cords and bands (as Psalms 18:4), to which the metaphor of loosing and being held best agrees. From morning till night your Lord is not in all your thoughts; he never affects your dealings with your fellow-men; you never endeavour to catch his spirit of love, and considerateness, and meekness; and thus, as a Leader and Exemplar, he is dead to you. Nay, not only do they take it quietly these men about whom all the power of God was thus seen in action in one form or another; but they rejoice that they were counted worthy to suffer. Therefore let all the house of Israel know: The sermon concludes with a summary. He boldly accused them of the murder of the Lord of glory, doing his duty in the sight of God, and for the good of their souls, with great firmness and fearlessness. He proceedeth from the Father and the Son, and he bears witness with both. While baptism with water was the expected symbol for conversion, it was not an indispensable criterion for salvation. (Longenecker). "This title of Lord was a more important title than Messiah, for it pictured Jesus total authority and His ability and right to serve as an equal with God the Father." This is the gospel message; that Jesus took our punishment for sin on the cross and remained a perfect Savior through the whole ordeal proved by His resurrection. This forms the occasion for the provisional wisdom of the Spirit of God. It wasnt until the gospel was preached that conviction from the Holy Spirit came. And this is the first message of the church centered on the theme of the resurrection. When God is working on someones heart, they want to come to Him; they will act to come to God. 2. The sermon was born of the occasion, and it used the event of the hour as God intended it to be used. And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith the Lord, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and daughters will prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: and upon my servants and handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will show wonders in the heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; and blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke: and the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved ( Acts 2:17-21 ). The only possible Scriptural precedent for this might be Jeremiah 42:7: Ten days later the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah. Nor is this all: for the place at the right hand of God, to which he is now exalted, is the place of power. Next followed the breaking of bread, the formal expression of Christian fellowship, and the special outward sign of remembering Him to whose death they owed all.
