Looking back at my post from last year, I realize now that I was thinking of "Double Plum" rather than 'Fragrant Plum'. I thought the color would work nicely along side these other plants. We reside in Chicago, but our heart is out west. As a working mother of four I did not get them all in the ground as quickly as my dad would have liked. Fragrant Plum was new for two seasons ago. They look generally like Japanese orchard plums (Prunus salicina and hybrids with it). Mine is grafted, and for me, the bush itself gets tall and is rather lanky. Generally, the Type-2 clematis had some overlap of bloom for me with the first round of rose blooms (which included once-bloomers), then would pause just as the Buddleia started flowering, and resume later in the season (while the Buddleia would still be flowering). Anyway Pat your roses is stunning. The fragrance and color of FP are enough of an attraction that I'll forgive it for having a modern look. I recently ordered this rose to put near my purple colored butterfly bush and a deep purple clematis. That is large sections of dead branches, at the same time that other parts were still viable. It is a very vigorous spreading purple of medium height not unlike Heirloom or Royal Amethyst (which I also have). We gave it the name Plum Perfect because the color is a rich lavender -red plum color. Nice climber with good scent. You could choose a midtown teal, rose, celadon green or lavender and then do the walls in the palest tint of that color. The buds are dark but your roses came out a light color. I talked with Rachel at Palatine Roses and she says they have no problems with growing Plum Perfect in Ontario and I do think a Plum Perfect budded on multiflora will be a good choice for those in colder climates. I've read on the description for the one I ordered..provided they send me the rose I ordered, that they get quite tall and it says its a continuous bloomer. I haven't had as much luck with SdlM's sports as I have with the rose itself but thought I would give this one a try. See this room as evolving and take your time. I have been growing Fragrant Plum for years. There are gorgeous purple accessories everywhere, so start searching on the internet and locally. Mine will be in morning sun only which may not be optimal, but I have a feeling the flowers will burn badly here in all-day sun. If you were looking to have a "purple element" throughout the season in this bed, then you will succeed by using these three plants. For me, one of the neat things about AL (aside from all those frilly petals), is her constant color change, from dark apricot to light pink--all at the same time on the bush. I'm a little afraid that Rina Hugo's color will be a little "loud" for my garden style and may be somewhat taller than I wanted for the spot allocated to it, but I've found that most roses don't grow as tall here, probably due to the stress of reflected heat and poor soil. After they died, I moved the box to my house when we sold their house. If not, I expect I'll be stuck paying at least $5K for a pergola. It sounds like the perfect purple rose for my climate, and that's not something you can say about all purple roses by any means. I think what threw me was the "heirloom rose" part of the description -- I wouldn't have thought a rose from 1990 would be an heirloom variety.
