It's 60 years old and perfumery still hasn't quite lived up to this one. Lovely classic. Classic and masculine. I feel clean and well groomed wearing it. He said back then you'd have to go in to the city to get fancy things for a date or preparation for an interview and remembered vaguely it was around 3-5 or something (60s-70s). Maybe if I hit the lottery. Smells lovely. Very well blended in the mid and a little mossy at the base. He combines Old World charm with a laissez-faire modern attitude that softens, but doesnt pretend to conceal, a certain animalic wildness under the eyes. If you're confident enough you can pull it off in any occasion. Every time I wear this, it puts me on a great nostalgic trip and makes me feel great. Such a shame because it truly has a great opening but whatever, at least I didn't waste my money on something I don't like. I still wonder if I got a fake bottle, because I cannot fathom how a fragrance that weak is this highly rated in the community. Now this take on vetiver is old school, and that is the reason why every young guy or gal say it reminds them their father or grandfather. One of the best fresh-herbal openings I've smelled. I don't know of any other fragrance like it. That alone should get your attention. This stuff takes my breath away. I've definitely had a few " damn this scent is perfect" moments. The longevity of it as a skin scent on me starting around the 6 hour mark is quite remarkable (ambient temperature ~60F). Another substitute for Eau Sauvage would be Allure Homme Sport Cologne which is more of a relaxing skin scent (but not cloying in the least). I am quite young but chypre family was always one of my favorites. My bottle is from around 2015 (I also have a vintage mini from the brown box era). Such an uplifting, feel good, timeless classic and even better in vintage formulations as noted. Nowadays it is lighter. The best way to describe it is "EAU" so good!! Classy, timeless masterpiece. The opening is beautiful, so fresh, so clean. Love how bits and parts of the scent drift up and around, accelerated by that warm breeze. I like it, but it smells a little too generic. It's kind of fun to spray 6 on all the pulse points, but I can not do this with either Armani Pour Homme or Eau Sauvage. It seemed suited more for the older gentleman (with good taste.) I dont know how this is possible. To my nose it smells dated, reminds me of something nice but I can't remember what! Almost got a Polo Green vibe from it, and unfortunately that does not blend well with my skin. On me it's a lemon and bergamot explosion when first sprayed, which then dries down to a lovely vetiver/oakmoss. He sought simple comforts then and now. Huge burst of citrus to begin with, but like most have said. Very fresh and clean this will make you smell unique nowadays. Rather than 100 bucks retail for 100ml with an atomizer. But this has probably the worst performance from all the perfumes in my wardrobe after Guerlain Cologne Impriale which last about 2 minutes on my skin. I mean why even bother creating Sauvage when they got it perfectly right years ago? Every time my wife drags me into Sephora I smell it on paper. Lasts longer than I expected. Then again Top Shelf isn't for everyone. This is just superb. For many, these are considered summer fragrances, but it's weird how I tend to grab for this for the colder weather. It then becomes herbal and it has this wonderful fresh watery feel with floral hints. I wore this as a twenty something, and have returned to it periodically. I've been collecting fragrances for about a decade. Once it hits the carnation and rose in the mid, im not the biggest fan. If Dior reformulated this to last a bit longer, it would be a solid 10/10. The combination of ingrdients, though well layered, delivers to my nose a chlorinated haze that I find off-putting. I think its at worst a dislike, but I dont see how someone could strongly hate it unless it reminds them of something. The way it evolved was masterful. I suspect fragrances in those days were made moderate so not to annoy people at work or a date. Oakmoss creates that unmistakable old school, barbershop vibe. it definitly has a vintage smell to it. I sprayed some on before leaving the store and stepped out from the air conditioned comfort of the shop and into the 92 degree and humid as a sauna day in New York smelling like the coolest dude in the City. As for the sillage, it is moderate while longevity is also moderate. a fascinating woman, an artist, very soft spoken, mysterious, extremely charismatic. I have a treasured vintage miniature, but the current version holds up pretty well. My skin literally drinks this perfume. I sprayed on more, on skin and clothing: same result--almost immediate disappearance. She said Dior Eau Sauvage. I don't know what others are talking about, performance is pretty good. Henson's "Bog of Eternal Stench", comical but nightmarish. The latest reformulated version appears to be more screechy and synthetic smelling. Today at Sephora I applied Eau Sauvage Parfum on one hand and Eau Sauvage EDT (regular) on another. It was wonderfully surprising. Dior Eau Sauvage is a reminder of what classic truly means. All in all: Dior's Eau Sauvage edt - can't recommend enough . : This smells of a classic and sophisticated manly fragrance - think Aqua Di Parma Colonia made more aromatic with Chanel Pour Monsieur with a 60s Dior twist. Great for warm/hot days. There are those who will have you believe the huge powerhouse scents of the 1980s were the most masculine fragrances ever created. I mean dreadful. Regardless of the fact some consider it dated, I guess this is something that makes it easier to wear - IMHO, it lost some edges, it became closer to what a common EdC is. I said fougere because it has more notes than your traditional citrus-to-lavender-to-vetiver type basic cologne and it has a twist in it that makes the smell both unique and easily recognizable. This eau-de-cologne opening is, as some have said, fairly brief, maybe 60-90 minutes, but it's not supposed to last because it's doing what eau de cologne does, offering a stimulating kiss on the cheek -- to do this for hours would be both artificial and wearing. I've had bottles of Eau Sauvage - both the current version and the vintage, and they were both wonderful. I am 20 and I will accumulate some money for 200ml bottle. I see the first hot sun and I think of him. While it has been around the 60s, it has a truly timeless aura around it. It actually smells quite good. However, the drydown is well worth the wait with its heavy vetiver and oakmoss base. My personal favourite scent of all time. In comparison to Capucci pour Homme though, Eau Sauvage does have a more full smell with higher potency in the opening. I was worried about the carnation here (I associate this smell with powder) and this is not powdery to my nose. Vintage Dior was much better than the new releases with a few exceptions. This really is the finest men's fragrance I have ever put my nose to, a complete and undeniable masterpiece. When I initially sprayed this on I got a very light citrus and thought, "Is that it?" The nose behind this fragrance is Edmond Roudnitska. One of the best, refined citrus men's fragrances ever made. I love this fragrance, but it's a 2 spray only cologne. I love old adverts with Alain Delon (my first celebrity crush) and it smells like Diorella (one of my favorites) who had to roughen up a bit to join all boys club. A masterpiece. The fragrance incorporates the following accords: lemon, basil, bergamot, cumin, lavender and fruit. I have a full bottle now, and I think i have a much better understanding of what this fragrance is doing. By all accounts and accords I should love this fragrance, and though I recognize its quality and longevity, I just cant get on board with the fragrance. Its classic, its bright, fresh, and somehow reminds me of my grandmas closet. At the first sniff, I noticed that it was quite similar to the Ea Sauvage Extreme version. Blah, blah, blah! I've heard it all. The class is always the class. A gentleman has strength, but balances that with effortless charm. Purchased alongside a 1997 Fahrenheit, both sealed bottles and completely different fragrances. The opening is wonderful, arising an almost niche quality balanced bergamot (contained citricity and bitterness), based on a discreet and contained floral, but pure and creamy-musky (or would it be resinous? The overall sensation is falling into an orchard of lemons, but the accord is deceptively complex: the piney quality of the rosemary mentholates the citrus notes, increasing their 'green' severity, and orris adds its chilly floral effect. The opening citron is the best, utterly fantastic. I got a really good deal at a discount store, and paid around $32 before taxes. But then it started getting warmer. The drydown gives way to the jasmine and the greens with a sandalwood base. It's clean and wearable and goes from somewhat fresh to mature within 15 minutes of the spritz (this is the dry down? Very classy, and I'm surprised at how it really doesn't smell dated at all despite being released almost 60 years ago! I absolutely adore this. I still believe Eau Sauvage has the best lemony scent I'm seeking of all the above listed, but for the price it just isn't worth $100. It completely strayed from the beautiful opening that attracted me to it in the first place but rather a dirty vetiver vibe. An absolute classic masterpiece, like so many here have opined. THE reference Citrus Aromatic "cologne", much like Guerlain Vetiver is THE reference Vetiver fragrance. It's like invading people's noses without consent. Would not recommend it as a blind buy due to its complex composition. Eau Sauvage opens with an intense, almost pungent mix of astringent, icy lemon, a hint of a verbena-like green and piercing neroli. I'm getting old, and am new to fragrances.
