Verse Psalms 33:12. From high in the skies God looks around, he sees all Adam's brood. Rather the foundation of Hebrew poetry is parallelism. If the war-horse be unruly and ill-managed, he may hurry his rider into danger instead of carrying him out of danger. Atheists think that, because he dwells above in heaven, he cannot, or will not, take notice of what is done here in this lower world; but thence, high as it is, he sees us all, and all persons and things are naked and open before him. As Brueggemann and Bellinger put it, as a song of praise and invitation to trust, Psalm 33 is a powerful antidote to every temptation to autonomy and self-s, Even so, what our self-reliance prevents us from seeing, or even considering, is the possibility that our amassing of weaponry is actually making us and the world less secure rather than more secure. We can say that this is a Psalm sung to the Greatest Musician, to an unknown tune, by the Sweet Psalmist of Israel ( 2 Samuel 23:1 ). It also reminds me of some musicians I have seen. On the one hand, we know it would be foolish to conclude that so long as we trust in God for all good things, we need not do anything ourselves. This is evidently said to distinguish such a nation from those which worshipped false gods or idols. Their hearts, as well as their times, are all in his hand: He fashions their hearts. The psalm tells us that The key to a thankful, worshiping heart is to rely completely on the Lord. An intentional link between Psalms 32 and 33 is all the more likely since Psalm 33:1 appears to be a direct response to 32:11, the final verse of Psalm 32. It is therefore our interest to make sure God's favour towards us, and then we may be sure of his power engaged for us, and need not fear whatever is against us. Walk around anyplace in our sanctuary, look back and you will see that the eye of God is watching you! Verses 13-15 declare that the Lord looks down at what is happening on our planet. The people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. the opponents trust themselves and their wealth (Psalm 49:6) while the psalmist entrusts life and future to God (49:15). Oh, how blessed is that nation who will honor God and who will serve God, and who will put God at the heart of their national life. 4. It is amazing to us that some liberal scholars suppose that the author of this psalm must have borrowed these ideas of the universality of God from a fictitious writer they call Deutero-Isaiah, and make that the basis of dating the psalm after the exile. The satisfaction he had of God's sovereignty and dominion, v. 10, 11. Why praise God? III. Dont compliment me please! It might be equally offensive to have him say, Yes, I know. For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. Sitting here on earth we wait in hope and faith. The idea here is, that the nation referred to is happy, or that its condition is desirable. As such, very often the second of the two lines also sheds retrospective light back onto the first. Worship ought to be enthusiastic, even with the volume turned up! By the way, another drawback of reading snippets of psalms in isolation is thisin this case, we miss the likelihood that Psalm 33 is an expansion upon the affirmation at the end of Psalm 32 that steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the LORD (32:10). Dont put your trust in earthly things but dont fail to shore up things on earth either. Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous! (2.) Take, for instance, verses 16-17 where the word great occurs three times to describe armies, fighting forces, and weaponry. Why try to get a good education? While others grovelled before their idols, the chosen people were elevated by a spiritual religion which introduced them to the invisible God, and led them to trust in him. In his word, here put for all divine revelation, all that which God at sundry times and in divers manners spoke to the children of men, and that is all right, there is nothing amiss in it; his commands exactly agree with the rules of equity and the eternal reasons of good and evil. The great desire he had that God might be praised. The strength of a giant is nothing without God. (verse 3). Hence he is called the Father of spirits: and this is a good argument to prove that he perfectly knows them. A mighty man, such as Goliath was, is not delivered by his much strength, when his day comes to fall. The first word of verses 4 and 9 is for, bracketing that section as a unit. Four things the psalmist expresses in these verses: I. In war horses were then so highly accounted of, and so much depended on, that God forbade the kings of Israel to multiply horses (Deut 17 16), lest they should be tempted to trust to them and their confidence should thereby be taken off from God. John 4:21-24. God has made it to appear in his works, (1.) "According to your faith be it unto you," is the Master's word, and he will not fall short of the scale which he has himself selected. The strength of a king is nothing without God. If he do not deliver the body from temporal death, yet he will deliver the soul from spiritual and eternal death. [4.] Psalm 33 This is a psalm of praise; it is probable that David was the penman of it, but we are not told so, because God would have us look above the penmen of sacred writ, to that blessed Spirit that moved and guided them. Because of course Psalm 33:12b immediately goes on to indicate that we are talking about ancient Israel here, about the people specially elected by God to become his beachhead in saving the whole world. Perhaps they concluded this because other psalms that David composed surround this one (cf. 11 The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Those that fear God and his wrath must hope in God and his mercy; for there is no flying from God, but by flying to him. Religious songs are the proper expressions of thankful praise; those are here required (v. 3): "Sing unto him a new song, the best you have, not that which by frequent use is worn, thread-bare, but that which, being new, is most likely to move the affections, a new song for new mercies and upon every new occasion, for those compassions which are new every morning." Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh. That sounds rather like a blanket statement, like something that certain people in American history have quoted to prop up the idea of the United States as a shining city on a hill, singularly chosen by God among all the peoples of the earth. We are foolish if we do not acknowledge this and celebrate it every day. For the sovereignty of his providence in the government of the world (ver 10, 11) and again, ver 13-17. This is another psalm with a title: To the Chief Musician. Psalms 33:1-22. Of course, that approach to Psalm 33 raises a big question. When Psalms 32 and 33 are heard together, the affirmation is that the divine grace offered to sinners (Psalm 32) is the same power that lies behind the creation of the world (33:6-7, although verse 7 may also be an allusion to the exodus), the events of history (verses 10-12), the supervision of humankind (verses 13-15), and the unmasking of so-called worldly power (verses 16-17). Clearly that is not what trusting God above all else means. It is an appeal for "mercy," which even joyful believers need; and it is sought for in a proportion which the Lord has sanctioned. And more explicitly, God is love. He still moulds the hearts of men, turns them as the rivers of water, which way soever he pleases, to serve his own purposes, darkens or enlightens men's understandings, stiffens or bows their wills, according as he is pleased to make use of them. A. Being so blessed, let us rejoice in our portion, and show the world by our lives that we serve a glorious Master. In the midst of his acknowledgments of God's providence he pronounces those blessed that have Jehovah for their God, who governs the world, and has wherewithal to help them in every time of need, while those were miserable who had this and the other Baal for their god, which was so far from being able to hear and help them that is was itself senseless and helpless (Psalms 33:12; Psalms 33:12): Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, even Israel, who had the knowledge of the true God and were taken into covenant with him, and all others who own God for theirs and are owned by him; for they also, whatever nation they are of, are of the spiritual seed of Abraham. Their hearts, as well as their times, are all in his hand; he formed the spirit of each man within him. Despite what verses 16-17 say, the fact of the matter is that almost everyone in the United States believes that our national security is based on a strong military that is equipped with the latest and most powerful weaponry. We sit with the blanket of God's promises resting upon our laps. If he be killed under him, he may be his death, instead of saving his life. The psalmist also assured the readers that He will be faithful to those who trust in Him. Neither the firmness and activity of his body nor the stoutness and resolution of his mind will stand him in any stead, any further than God is pleased to give him success. All this is evidence of Gods steadfast love, which is the sure hope of those who fear God (verse 18). The rehearsal of how Gods steadfast love is active in the world (verses 4-19) leads to an affirmation of hope and trust in verses 20-21 and a final prayer that Gods steadfast love would continue to be present (verse 22). If he do not deliver the body from temporal death, yet he will deliver the soul from spiritual and eternal death.
